This adds relatively little extra labor since excavation and forming is already underway, keeping your per-square-foot installation cost as low as possible.

A retrofit involves removing and replacing your existing driveway surface to embed the new cable system. The demolition and disposal of old material, plus full re-paving, adds significant labor and material costs. That said, many homeowners find the long-term payoff worthwhile — eliminating manual snow removal and protecting the new surface from plow damage and de-icing chemical degradation that shortens the lifespan of an unheated driveway.

Getting the Best Price

To get the most competitive quote, always gather at least three written bids from licensed local contractors. Prices vary considerably by region: contractors in high-snowfall areas like Minnesota, Colorado, and upstate New York have more experience and often price these installations more competitively than contractors in lower-demand markets. Ask each bidder to specify the cable wattage density, sensor type included, and whether any required electrical panel upgrade is part of the quoted price.

Timing also affects your final cost. Scheduling installation during the off-season — late spring through early fall — typically yields better contractor availability and sometimes lower labor rates since demand peaks in the fall. Additionally, check with your local utility about demand-response or off-peak electricity rate programs. Some utilities offer significantly cheaper overnight rates that a programmable snow-melt controller can take advantage of, reducing your operating cost well below standard estimates.
