A qualified heated driveway contractor combines expertise in two distinct trades: electrical work and hardscape installation. First, confirm they hold a valid state electrical license, since all heating cable systems connect to your home's electrical panel and must pass local code inspection. Second, look for direct experience with the specific surface material — whether concrete, asphalt, or pavers — because cable spacing, depth, and pour timing all differ by material.

Beyond credentials, look for a contractor who carries both general liability and workers' compensation insurance. Ask to see the certificates before any work begins. Check their reviews specifically for heated driveway projects, not just general driveway work. A contractor with 50 glowing reviews for driveway repaving but no experience with embedded cable systems is not the right fit. Verified photos of prior snow-melt installations are the gold standard.

Questions to Ask Before You Hire

Before signing any contract, ask each bidder: What brand and wattage of heating cable do you use, and is it UL-listed? Will you provide the ohm resistance readings before and after the pour to verify cable integrity? Who pulls the electrical permit, and does your quote include the inspection fee? What warranty do you provide on the installation labor, and is there a manufacturer's warranty on the cable itself? These answers reveal how experienced and accountable the contractor truly is.

Also ask about the thermostat or automatic control system included in the quote. A basic manual timer is very different from a smart aerial sensor that automatically activates when pavement temperature drops below freezing and moisture is detected. Confirm who programs the controller after installation and whether the contractor provides a walkthrough so you understand how to adjust settings or override the system manually during edge-case weather events like freezing rain or heavy, wet snow.
